Your heart races as your burning thighs pedal furiously in a sprint to the finish of a cycling race through the mountains of France. You push harder- beyond the pain, beyond your breath, beyond what you knew you were capable of. Triumphant, you throw your arms to the sky, open your eyes, and suddenly remember that you are in Uniontown, Ohio on a spin bike.
You may not actually be in France, but in finishing a spin class, you just pushed yourself to use and strengthen at least ten muscles and got a great cardio workout. In fact, your body will continue to burn calories long after the workout is done.
Winter is coming, and with it comes snow, hazardous road conditions, and little daylight, all of which can limit our opportunity for outdoor exercise. This winter, come take an indoor cycling, or spin class. It is an interval training workout in which you burn lots of calories. You will start at a comfortable speed, but with the help of motivational music you will quickly work in up to 2 ½ intervals at peak intensity with a quick recovery. By changing the resistance against which you pedal you will climb hills, sprint on flat ground, or even “jump” by alternately standing up or hovering on the bike. In the process, you will work your latissimus dorsi, spinal erectors, gluteus maximus, hamstrings, gastrocnemius/soleus, quadraceps, pectoralis major/minor, biceps, and triceps, AND get a great cardio workout while having fun.
Contact me if you are interested in trying a spin class this winter. I offer classes in the early morning, mid-morning, and on weekends. Challenge yourself to work your muscles and maybe your imagination on a fantastic strength and cardio workout!
